Hello, hello!

Happy holiday season everyone!  Shopping time is upon us, and it's getting to be crunch time.  For those of you who are buying for little ones, I had to share this book with you.  It is a must have!  My baby loves books & cats, so when I saw this I picked up a copy right away.

ALL proceeds from the sales of this book go to Animal Friends of Pittsburgh.  That's the best part about this book.  It also happens to be a super cute story, and will make your kids smile.  It's a win-win!  It's an easy buy through Amazon too.  This is going in the stocking in my house, I can't wait to add this to story time!

I hope you all enjoy!  Happy Holidays from all of us here at Fetch Pet Care Pittsburgh/South Hills!

Top 10 Kitten Names!

I came across this slideshow on Yahoo today, of the top 10 current kitten names.  I made a list of my own beforehand, and I ended up guessing 4 of the 10 correctly.  I thought that was pretty good, since the list is endless!  If you want to make your list before you look ~ now's the time to do it....results under the crazy kitties below...

10. Smokey
9. Sophie
8. Tiger (I guessed)
7. Chloe
6. Charlie
5. Kitty (I guessed, and this always cracks me.  Name your cat.)
4. Oliver
3. Lucy
2. Max (I guessed)
1. Bella (Also has to be up there for dog names & baby names.)

I'm surprised Simba, Mittens, Whiskers & Snowball aren't on this list.  Maybe I'm just a total 80's baby though, and that's what cats of my generation were called!  My cats are Simba & Lily.  So now I'm wondering what the top cat & dog names are for our Fetch Pet Care branch.  I'm going to try to figure it out!  I know there's a lot of Bella's off the top of my hand, but we shall see who the winner is!

Results...coming...soon...

Happy Howl-A-Ween everybody!!

I hope all you East Coasters weathered out the storm!  We had a lot of rain & winds here in Pittsburgh, but nothing too bad.  I feel for all of those people whose lives were greatly effected by the hurricane. ♥

Trick or Treating in our area has been moved to Saturday.  Great news for the kiddo's who probably didn't want to be out in the rain.  Or really, great news for the parents who didn't want their kids out in it.  When I was a kid I would trick or treat in a blizzard without thinking twice!

Regardless of when you are celebrating Halloween, it's a good time to keep a close eye on your pets.  With the door opening & closing to give out candy all night, it's a common occurrence to have pets sneak out.  If it's warm  & dry where you are, a good way to combat this is to set up a table already outside so you aren't opening & closing the door.  If you have a friendly pet, you might dress them up & bring them out with you!

If you own a black cat, this is an especially important time of year to keep an eye on your cat.  Do not let it outdoors, even if it is an outdoor cat.  Black cats can be in danger around Halloween by people who steal them, or worse.  Don't let your black cat's wander around today - keep them safe inside.

Make sure your kids & pets wear reflectors if you take them out at night!  And as always, keep a close eye on everyone & have safe & happy Halloween!

Happy National Dog Week!

September 24th-September 30th is National Dog Week in the United States, and what a wonderful week it is!  It's a week dedicated to our 4 legged furry friends of all breeds, shapes & sizes!  We love them year round of course, but it's nice to have a week to show some extra appreciation for their unwavering love & compassion.

What are some things you can do to celebrate?  Here's just a few ideas from your friends at Fetch Pet Care Pittsburgh/South Hills!

1. Extra treats - we recommend healthy treats of course!

2. Extra playtime - this is a great time of year for outside dog walks, with the cooler weather approaching.  If your dog doesn't like long walks, take him or her out in the yard with a new ball or bone to play with.

3.  A shiny new toy - visit your local pet supply shop and pick up something new for your pet.  They may have their old favorites, but all dogs will appreciate a new toy!

4. Adopt a new friend! - If you don't have a dog yet, visit your local shelter and find a new friend.  You can also add a new dog to the pets you already give a home to.  Always adopt dogs from a shelter or reputable breeder.

5. Have a play date - call up a friend who has a dog & take a walk together!  Or visit your local dog park so you dog can mingle with other dogs.  If you need us at Fetch, we always have a sitter who can take your dog out for a stroll too!

Enjoy National Dog Week ~ give your pups an extra hug from us! ♥

Hello Fetch Pet Care friends & readers~

A lot of people have been asking me for updates about our missing cat, Vegas.  Unfortunately, we have not been able to find him yet.  We've followed numerous leads, but none have been him.  We have not given up hope.  I have realized recently how many people lose pets, and are not sure the best way to go about finding them.  Likewise, so many people find pets and don't know how to go about locating the owner.  I thought I'd put together a list for you all on what to do if you find yourself in either of these situations.  Bookmark it, print it, do whatever you have to do - but these are important things that can help your pet, or someone else's!

1. Put out food & water
Most animals are territorial, and will come home or stay around home.  This is especially true with cats.  It's easy to become disoriented & lost though, so scents from home can help them find their way.

2. Put out pet bed, litter or item of clothing
As with number 1, familiar scents can bring a pet home.  For dogs, leaving out an item of clothing that they sleep on, or that smells like the owner, can help.  For cats, leaving out their litter box can help.

3. Visit PetHarbor.com
This one is very important.  If you have lost your pet, make sure you list them on Pet Harbor.  If you have found a lost pet, check Pet Harbor to see if it matches anyone's missing pet!

4.  Check with the police, animal shelters & vets
If you've lost your pet, report it to the police, and all shelters & vets in the area.  Giving them a flyer w/a picture & pet information also helps.  If you've found a pet, check with all these places.  They are likely to know about the missing animals in the area.

5.  Visit Craigslist
This popular venue for local postings is a must for a lost or found pet.  Post your pets picture & information in both the Lost & Found section, and the Pets section, of your city.  Repost every few days to keep it fresh.  If you've found a pet, check these section, going back pretty far, to see if any match with what you've found.

6. Make Flyers
This is for lost pets.  Making flyers & hanging them around the area can bring your pet home since it reaches so many people.  With so many pet owners out there, a lot of people take interest in lost pet signs.  When most people see an animal roaming around, they continue on their way.  But if they've seen a sign matching that animal, they are much more likely to stop.  Then they can contact you to report a sighting.  At least then you have some idea where to look since animals can get far quickly.

7. Social Media
If you've lost or found a pet, post information on facebook, twitter, blogger, and any other form of social media you use.  The more people that see it, the better!

8.  Alert Neighbors
If you've lost a pet, chances are somebody has seen it roaming around.  Since so many pets stay in the neighborhood, talk to your neighbors!  Let them know your pet is missing, and give them a flyer.  If you've found a pet, ask neighbors if they know who it belongs to.  It could very well be someone's in your own neighborhood.

These are just SOME of the things you can do to help your lost pet, or someone else's lost pet.  The most important thing you can do is to get your pet micro-chipped if they aren't already.  Microchips can instantly bring your pet home if it is brought to a vet or shelter.  If you've found a lost pet that you have actually caught & are caring for - take it to a local shelter or vet to be scanned for a chip.  It's the easiest & fastest way to pair up the owner & pet!

Any more ideas, please let me know!! ♥

Hello everyone!!

I just found the coolest thing on Pinterest for dog owners.  This company takes a picture of your dog, and custom makes a stuffed animal that looks just like it.  I absolutely love this idea - genius!  It's a bit expensive ($95), but a lot of work goes into each piece, and the proceeds do support animals.  So you really can't beat that!  Some of the examples are simply amazing.  This one was my favorite!

Check it out!  If you get one, please send me pictures so I can share them!  Here is a link to the company's site:

Hi friends!  And Happy "Take Your Cats to the Vet Week"!

Believe it or not, this is actually a Nationally recognized week.  This is a great thing, because vet care is so important.  Most people visit the vets when they have sick pets, but preventative care is important too.  We take our kids to "well visits"  at the doctors, and we should do the same with our pets.  Let's face it - they are our kids too!

Well visits are times when a vet can discover something that we haven't seen symptoms at home for yet.  This is something that can be treated and potentially save your cats life!  At first I wondered why this week didn't recognize dogs too.  After reading the following article though, it makes sense.  People take their dogs to the vets more frequently than their cats.  Dogs love car rides, and they are easier to get in the car.  Cats are almost impossible to get into a cat bag/car.  I know, mine as like this.  As a result, they go to the vet less.  So this a great week to recognize!

Love this article, I highly recommend you check it out if you're a pet owner!

If you're a pet owner in Pittsburgh, especially in the South Hills, and you're looking for a fantastic vet, I highly recommend checking out Companions First Veterinary Clinic in South Park.  Dr. Goodell is who takes care of my cats, and I trust her 100%.  There's nowhere else I'd take my pets!

Have a great day everyone!

Happy Weekend everyone!  TGIF!  I thought this would be a cute way to start off your weekend.  Our previous owner of Fetch, Amy, emailed me this link this morning.  It's 35 amazing pictures of animals hanging out with miniature version of themselves.  The "aww" factor is pretty much overwhelming!  Here's a few of my favorites...

 "Meow!"

"Woof!"

"Neigh!"

Top 5 Reasons to Adopt an Adult Pet!

Many people, when considering adopting a pet, go straight for kittens or puppies.  Who can blame them?  Is there anything cuter?  I got both of my pets as kittens, so I understand!  I have learned during my experience with animals, that there are so many benefits to adopting adult cats & dogs.  Here are just a few of the great reasons!

1. They already have distinct personalities, so you can choose the pet that fits you.  Kittens & puppies can turn out to be any which way, but if you choose an adult pet, you can pick one that fits your needs.  Do you want a lap cat?  A quiet dog?  A playful pet?  A pet who does well with other animals or one who prefers to be a solo pet?  The shelter volunteers will be able to help you pick the pet with the personality you're looking for.

2. You're saving a life!  Let's face it - kittens and puppies are going to get adopted quickly.  But adult pets tend to take longer to get adopted, if at all.  When you adopt an adult pet, you're saving them from a life in a cage and giving them a forever home in your warm house.  What could be a better reason than that?

3. No need for potty training or litter training!  If you choose an adult pet, you can choose one that is already house trained, litter trained, and knows commands.  There is no difficult time period of trying to train the pet.  It's been said that having a newborn animal is similar to having a newborn baby!  They are adorable, and a handful (but wonderful!)  Just think of adopting an adult pet though, you can skip the tough part of potty training.

4. The animal will be healthy!  Shelters inspect the animals that are there, and have a medical team to treat them.  When you adopt your adult pet, you know what you're getting.  They will be fixed, up to date on all shots, and ready to go home with you without any surprises!

5. You'll save money.  Newborn animals need lots of vet visits, shot updates, and other things as they grow.  Adult pets have already gone through all this, hence saving you lots of money along the way.  There's also no mystery of what kind of food the animal likes, what kind of litter will be best, what kind of toys they like, etc.  You'll know all of this already and won't need to test new brands to find what's best.

Those are just a few of the reasons that adult pets are awesome!  Go visit your local shelter today to find a pet that's perfect for you.  The joys that animals bring our lives outweigh any reason anyone could have for not adopting one.  ♥
